RECYCLING & COMPOSTING
Commodore Sloat School has a comprehensive recycling and composting program. All students, beginning in Kindergarten, are taught to know the difference between recyclables and compostables and trash, and to put their "trash" in the right place.
GREEN SPACES
Sloat has worked hard over the past several years to enhance our green spaces for students and families to enjoy. We have a first-class learning garden right in the middle of the school and many green spaces that volunteers have planted with native trees, shrubs, and flowers. We have been the recipient of the California Fertilizer Foundations Garden Grant and are part of the Green School Yard Alliance.
When the district was doing construction several years ago to bring the facility up to compliance with the Americans With Disabilities Act, we negotiated for the contractors to bulldoze up a section of the huge upper play yard to become a garden. The result is a beautiful planted space with an outdoor classroom incorporated. |

SOLAR ENERGY AT SLOAT
Commodore Sloat received a grant from PG&E
in 2009 as part of the California Solar Schools Project
to install a solar panel at Sloat. The panel will be installed during the 2009-10 school year, and we expect it to help offset our energy costs as well as provide an educational example for our students.
GREENING AT THE DISTRICT LEVEL
San Francisco Unified School District now has a special sustainability program. Check it out on their their web site.
