Arts Enrichment at Sloat

At Sloat, we believe that what our students learn in the extra enrichment classes provided foster their creativity and boosts their academic performance. Expert instructors in various skilled areas work with students 30 minutes to one hour each week for a variable number of weeks per year, depending on the funding.

VISUAL ARTS
Visual arts is taught for all grades for nine weeks by Aileen Barr, through San Francisco Arts in Education. Aileen Barr is a working artist, specializing in ceramic tiles. She has created several public art works in San Francisco and this is her fifth year teaching at CSS. This program is currently funded by Prop H.

THEATER ARTS
Grades K to 3 receive theater arts, taught by a teacher from San Francisco Arts in Education. This program is currently funded by Prop H and runs for nine weeks.

MUSICAL THEATER
Also taught by San Francisco Arts in Education, this program is offered for grades 4 and 5 and runs for 19 weeks.

CHORAL MUSIC
Students in grades K-3 enjoy singing instruction from a professional musician. This program is currently funded by Prop H. Classes for K-1 run for 16 weeks, and 2-3 for 18 weeks.

POETRY
Grades 3-5 receive poetry instruction from a poet-in-residence chosen from California Poets in the Schools. The program’s primary focus is to encourage students to write, creating poetry using their imagination, life experience, and special perceptions. Children in the program perform their poetry in an assembly for the school and create a written anthology of poems. This program is funded by the Parents' Club. Classes for 3-4 run for 16 weeks, and for 5th grade, 12 weeks.

ADVENTURES IN MUSIC (AIM)
Funded by the San Francisco Symphony, AIM is music appreciation for grades 1-5. The Symphony puts on four concerts for each grade at CSS and provides instructional materials to prepare for the concerts. The program culminates in a symphony at Davies Symphony Hall.

INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC
Woodwind, brass, and stringed instrument instruction is available for 4th and 5th grades, taught in a group setting by visiting instructors. This program is funded by the district.
